Using BUTT

BUTT is an excellent free audio broadcasting software that is available for Windows, Linux and Macs. Download and install it from here: https://danielnoethen.de/butt/

It is extremely easy to configure BUTT so that you can broadcast audio using it into any Geminar.

How to setup BUTT for a specific Geminar?

Butt Configuration

When you start BUTT, click on Settings on the main screen. That will show you the “butt settings” dialog. From there, select the Main tab (It's the first one) From that TAB, select “Server Settings” and add a new “Server”

That will open up another dialog. I had already made the server, so now I am editing it for you. In your case, when adding a server the same dialog would be presented without any entries in the fields. Please do the following in that dialog:

  1. Give any name you want. Ideally, give the same name as that of the Geminar
  2. Under Type select “icecast” – We do not use Shoutcast or WebRTC
  3. Give the address as radio.geminars.com and its port as 8199
  4. Give the password that is specifically assigned for broadcasting. This can be seen when you edit your profile at Geminars. This password is NOT the same as that of your account at Geminars
  5. The Icecast mountpoint should be the same one that is shown in the Author's dashboard for that specific Geminar
  6. The Icecast user should be the same as your own username for your account at Geminars

Do not give any other information. Now you can save the configuration.

How to configure BUTT for other Geminars?

For other Geminars, follow exactly the same steps and add as many “Servers” as there are Geminars. For your own sanity, give the name of the server same as that of the Geminar. Else; in your hurry, you may accidentally end up broadcasting to a different Geminar, and not the one you had intended to.

How to setup the microphone and other audio settings?

BUTT Audio Settings

Go to the BUTT Settings dialog. This time, select the “Audio” tab. You can use the settings that are shown in the above image. However make sure that the microphone that is selected is actually the one that you want to use from your computer. A computer could have several microphone, so select Update Devices button in that dialog, and once BUTT determines all the microphones that you are currently available for your computer; you should choose the correct one as the “Primary Audio Device” You may not always use the “Default PCM device” – the one shown in the image!

IMPORTANT The Codec option in that dialog should be OPUS. If it is NOT OPUS your broadcast may go thru but your audience will not be able to hear you. Also note that the bitrate should be a maximum of 96kbps (In the image, I had selected 64kbps – which is usually good enough)

The Recording options can be selected as per your preference, as the recording is done locally (if you chose to record, that is)

How to start broadcasting?

Firstly you need to go to the Settings and select the correct Server for the geminar you are broadcasting into. You should also make sure that the Audio settings are correct.

Then return to the main screen of BUTT and simply click on the broadcast function (It looks like a regular play button in audio controls – a white triangle) If your settings were correct, it will take a few seconds and connect to the specific Geminar.
